The NFL has made a big change by expanding the season from 17 to 18 weekends, but San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle wants to see the league go even further.
Kittle jumped on “Cold as Balls” show with Kevin Hart and explained why he believes the NFL needs to give the players two byes per season instead of just one.
“There’s a huge physical toll,” Kittle said. “And like, 17 games is a lot. It’s a lot of games, with one bye, whether it’s Week Four or the bye in Week 11. I’m advocating for two byes.”
The 49ers star definitely makes a valid point. These players take an absolute beating every single week and having just one weekend off throughout the course of nearly five months isn't much. Kittle even revealed that he spends six figures on his body every year to help with the physical toll. That won't hurt a guy who makes millions per season, though.
As Mike Florio of PFT noted, the NFL did experiment with the two byes scenario in 1993, but there were only 26 teams at the time. With 32 now in the league, it could potentially be more viable to add in another bye week.
Things are always changing therefore maybe the 49ers TE will get his wish in the future. It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing for the NFL anyway because it just gives them more viewers and an extra week.
