Jason Verrett is all set to make his debut with the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday. What role he will play against the Cincinnati Bengals, though, still remains to be seen.

San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed on Friday that the veteran cornerback will make his 49ers debut in Week 2. Though signed to start on the outside, there's no guarantee Verrett will see playing time on defense at all, let alone open the game. Where is Shanahan counting on him making an impact? Special teams.

“I hope so,” he said when asked if Verrett would play special teams, per Kyle Madson of Niners Wire. “Everyone we’d get up, we’d like to be getting in somehow. That’d be a factor definitely.”

The former first-round pick signed a one-year deal with San Francisco in free agency. Verrett, one of the most oft-injured players in football since he entered the league in 2014, suffered an ankle sprain during the second week of training camp, missing the remainder of the preseason.

The 49ers took an an extra cautious approach with Verrett throughout the offseason. They initially lined him up at second-string cornerback when training camp began, loathe to give him too much work on the field as he finished recovering from a torn Achilles tendon that caused him to miss all of last season. Jason Verrett was absent all but one game of the 2017 season, too, after being placed on injured reserve following the season-opener.

San Francisco and Cincinnati kickoff from Paul Brown Stadium at 1:00 p.m. EST.
