Jimmy Garoppolo lasted just three games in his first full season as the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers after tearing his ACL.
However, Garoppolo may be back on the field sooner than we think.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said that Garoppolo is ahead of schedule in his rehab and is “doing drops” every day during his workouts, according to 49ers reporter Joe Fann.
In the three games in which Garoppolo did play this past season, he threw for 718 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions while completing 59.6 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 90.
San Francisco acquired the 27-year-old in a trade with the New England Patriots midway through the 2017 campaign. He went on to start five games for the Niners that season, throwing for 1,560 yards, seven touchdowns and five picks while completing 67.4 percent of his passes and recording a passer rating of 96.2.
Garoppolo, who played his collegiate football at Eastern Illinois, was originally selected by the Patriots in the second round (62nd pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft and was supposed to be Tom Brady's heir apparent.
However, Brady didn't exactly decline during Garoppolo's stint in New England, so, as a result, the Pats ended up dealing the signal-caller to the 49ers.
Garoppolo threw just 94 passes in three-and-a-half seasons with the Patriots, accumulating 690 yards and five touchdowns.
San Francisco is coming off of a season in which it won just four games.
The Niners have not made the playoffs since the 2013-14 campaign and have tallied 12 wins total over the last three years.
