There is still no clear-cut choice to be the starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL season. But if you're into overreactions, then the gig might just have been bagged by Trey Lance — and not by Jimmy Garoppolo — after the rookie went off with this 80-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Trent Sherfield in the second quarter of Saturday night's preseason game between the Niners and the Kansas City Chiefs.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has not named a starter yet for Week 1 of the 2021 NFL regular season, which is also why these preseason games could be a huge telling factor as to which quarterback will have that edge. On one hand, there's Garoppolo, who is being paid huge money. The 49ers signed him to a 5-year deal worth $137.5 million in 2018.

It would be hard for the 49ers to stomach having someone that expensive having a backup role to a rookie, so it's not hard to imagine that Garoppolo would still remain as the team's starter under center. Plus, Jimmy G didn't look bad at all in his start in the preseason game against the Chiefs., Before Lance took over, Garoppolo went 3 of 3 for 26 yards.

On the other hand, there's Trey Lance, who was taken third overall by the 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft. San Francisco would not spend that kind of a pick on a quarterback if it had complete trust in Garoppolo.

In any case, this is an interesting QB battle to monitor for the rest of the offseason.
