San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan believes Jimmy Garoppolo had an unbelievable season in 2019, and he thinks his 28-year-old quarterback can build from that.
During the team's virtual State of the Franchise event this week, Shanahan spoke out about Garoppolo and his growth with the 49ers.
“I think Jimmy had an unbelievable year last year,” Kyle Shanahan said (via 49ers Webzone). “When you look at him statistically, just percentages and stuff of what he did, he's extremely accurate, kept us in some very good situations, and won a few games for us, too. He had a number of games where he had to come out huge on some 3rd-and-longs, some last-minute drives, and make some big plays that won us some games.”
Statistically speaking, Garoppolo had a phenomenal season in 2019, throwing for 3,978 yards and 27 touchdowns. Furthermore, Garoppolo was one of the most efficient red zone quarterbacks in the NFL, completing 62.5 percent of his passes on throws inside the 10-yard line.

“Jimmy was one of the better quarterbacks in the league this year,” the 49ers coach said. “There's still a ton of room to grow, though, and he knows that. I know that. And to only have one year in this league (as a starter), for him to do what he did, it's very exciting.”
This past season, Jimmy Garoppolo ranked in the top five in the NFL in touchdowns (27), yards per attempt (8.4) and completion percentage (69.1). However, Garoppolo did struggle at times during the regular season. He threw 13 interceptions and had another eight interceptions dropped by defenses.
Furthermore, in the postseason, Garoppolo completed only 17 of just 27 attempts in victories over the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers. But at only 28 years of age, Garoppolo still has plenty of room for growth.
