Kyle Shanahan is not closing the door on Jimmy Garoppolo's potential return in the 2022 season amid rumors that the San Francisco 49ers are ready to move on from him.
Garoppolo's future has been a major talking point since the 49ers' loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the NFC title game. Of course the veteran quarterback has long been involved in trade rumors, especially after the team drafted Trey Lance to be their quarterback for the future.
However, those talks only intensified after a rather up-and-down 2021 season for Garoppolo and following their playoffs exit despite reaching the conference championship.
For Shanahan, though, keeping the 30-year-old QB for another year remains an option.

All signs point to Jimmy Garoppolo being traded from the 49ers, with his latest comment hinting that he's eyeing to be put on a winning situation. San Francisco GM John Lynch also indicated as much, noting that they will be straightforward with the QB whatever they decide.
Garoppolo is recovering from shoulder and thumb injuries he sustained during the season and the playoffs, and that will be his primary focus for now. He is expected to undergo surgery for his right thumb injury, which could be a major factor in his future.
It remains to be seen how Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers will navigate the trade talks involving Garoppolo, but it is certainly a storyline worth keeping an eye on.
