San Francisco 49ers fans will have to wait until at least Week 1 in the regular season to see Nick Bosa step onto an NFL field. General manager John Lynch made an appearance on KNBR on Thursday morning and said that Bosa suffered a significant ankle sprain that will keep him out of the preseason.

“We won’t see in the preseason and we’ll go from there. . . . We’ll get him right and he’ll be a great player for a long time in this league,” Lynch said, via Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Lynch also said that the team will make sure that he is 100 percent right before they run him onto the field and they still expect he will be in this league playing at a high level for a very long time. This isn't the first time that Bosa has dealt with injuries during his career.

Last season he was shut down at Ohio State because of a core muscle injury. He also missed some of this offseason with a lingering hamstring injury. Preseason games aren't important to everyone, but after not playing much with the Buckeyes last year, it felt important to get him run during the preseason.

That won't happen now so it will be interesting to see how slowly they work him into games after he is healthy. This feels like a situation that his snaps could be limited for a couple of weeks once he is healthy enough to come back, although it's still unclear exactly when that will be.
