Anthony Davis might be making an NFL comeback, but it won't be with the San Francisco 49ers. The 49ers have released Davis from their roster, per Field Yates of ESPN.com.
At the beginning of the month, Davis announced his intention to un-retire and make a comeback. The offensive tackle was a first-round pick back in 2010, but he hasn't played in a few years. Davis has filed the paperwork to be reinstated, and will now be a free agent free to sign with any team.
The Rutgers product became an immediate starter for San Francisco, starting all 16 games in each of his first four seasons in the league. He also started in Super Bowl XLVII for the team. But after the 2014 season he decided to walk away from the game, citing health reasons.
Article Continues BelowHe then briefly decided to come out of retirement in 2016. The 49ers welcomed him back, but he ended up playing in just one game before stepping away again. When he announced his decision to come back again earlier this month, he cited the progress the league has made in reducing concussions as one of his reasons for returning.
Davis dealt with concussion issues earlier on, but feels he's recovered well enough to take another stab at it. He was a very talented player in the past, but he's still only played in one game since the 2014 season. He might be able to latch on with another team willing to take another shot on his theoretical upside, but his phone won't exactly be ringing off the hook.
