San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Trent Taylor suffered a Jones fracture on his right toe on Thursday and completed surgery on the foot on Friday, general manager John Lynch announced on the team's broadcast during Saturday's game per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.

Taylor was among the inactives for the 49ers, which were announced prior to kickoff of their tilt with the Dallas Cowboys. Taylor, 25, is entering his third season in the NFL—all with San Francisco—after being selected in the fifth round of the 2017 draft out of Louisiana Tech.

The 5-foot-8 Taylor has made 69 receptions in his first two seasons on the gridiron, totaling 645 yards for three touchdowns and 9.3 yards per reception. He's appeared in 29 of the 32 Niners games including 14 of last year's 16-game schedule.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan displayed a hopeful sentiment while speaking to reporters, expressing optimism that Taylor could return for the team's season opener in September against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

“We're lucky we caught it when it was just a stress fracture, and usually when you go with that for a little bit, it ends up breaking, and it can be a lot worse,” Shanahan said per Wagoner. “He was complaining about a little pain, so we got the X-ray, saw a little fracture in there … We decided to do it now so it can be more of a four-to-six-week injury instead of an eight-to-10-week [issue].”

Taylor shared a hopeful message on his Twitter account Saturday, too, claiming he'll be “missing a couple of games.” It's unclear whether he's referring to solely the Bay Area franchise's preseason or if the injury's recovery time will bleed into the regular season.
