After the end of the San Francisco 49ers' season, fans expected Jimmy Garoppolo to be out of the team soon. It was an open secret that Garoppolo was merely a placeholder last season for star rookie Trey Lance. Even the former Patriots QB himself seemed to know this, as he gracefully exited the franchise…

Well, sort of. Despite early rumors suggesting a big market for Jimmy Garoppolo, the 49ers have failed to find a taker for their former QB. His shoulder surgery seems to have discouraged would-be suitors for him. As a result, Lance's status in the totem pole has come into question.

Well, if these rumors are to believed, Trey Lance will still be the 49ers' quarterback of the future. Jeremy Fowler reported that the 2021 first-round pick has been given informal indications that he's the QB1 for next season. Whether that changes with Garoppolo's destination, though, remains to be seen.

“Meanwhile, Trey Lance has been working out in the Bay Area. I'm told that he's got indications, at least informal indications from the team, that he'll be the guy next year. He's set to be that. Now, whether that means that they [49ers] would still keep Garoppolo and that could change the dynamic, possibly. But right now, Lance is going to be the starter.”

With the 49ers paying a premium to draft Trey Lance, it's clear as day that he was meant to be the future of the franchise. However, Garoppolo's presence leaves them with a conundrum. For now, though, it seems like Lance is slated to be the full-time starter for the team next season.
