The San Francisco 49ers want to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo, but it seems they cannot easily trade him because of his contract. Just ask the Carolina Panthers.

Carolina has been linked with Garoppolo this offseason as they look for an upgrade at the QB spot. However, his $26.9 million salary for 2022 is a big turn off for the Panthers. Simply put, while they need a signal-caller, they do not value Garoppolo as much as his salary suggests.

However for the 49ers, they don't want to eat part of Garoppolo's salary just to trade him, per the Charlotte Observer.

But Garoppolo’s recent shoulder surgery, as well as his injury history, is a far greater concern for some within the organization. The Panthers want no part of his $26.9 million salary, and the 49ers haven’t shown a willingness to take to carry those payments in a trade.

It remains to be seen what the 49ers will do with Jimmy Garoppolo. They look set to start Trey Lance as QB no. 1 come 2022, but they might open the new campaign with Garoppolo on their side as well.

With the Panthers seemingly out as a potential trade partner as well, the 49ers will have to keep looking for another team who desperately needs a starting-quality QB. For now, all they can do it stay patient.
