Back in Week 10, you might remember that Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson took a brutal hit to the chin from Karlos Dansby while releasing a pass. A flag was thrown for unnecessary roughness against the Arizona Cardinals linebacker, and at the instruction of referee Walt Anderson, Wilson was forced to leave the game to be evaluated for a concussion.

Wilson adjusted his jaw after receiving the blow, but it didn't appear the hit caused an injury to his head. Frustrated that he was taken off the field in an important divisional game for his team, the Wisconsin product quickly entered and exited the blue medical tent on the sideline before returning to the field. He only missed one play.

While Wilson didn't appear to be hurt, the Seahawks' failure to conduct the proper tests required when a player leaves a game to be evaluated for a concussion was troubling. Now, nearly a month and a half later, the NFL and NFL PA have jointly decided to punish Seattle. From the press release:

Seattle has been fined $100,000 and the coaching and medical staffs will be required to attend remedial training regarding the protocol.

The required evaluation was not conducted and Mr. Wilson was permitted to return to the game without an evaluation.  Once it is determined that a medical examination is warranted, a player may only be cleared to return by the medical staff; Mr. Wilson’s return to the field without a sideline concussion evaluation was therefore in violation of the Concussion Protocol.  Subsequently the team medical staff did examine the player and clear him per the protocol.

$100K is the maximum fine for an organization's first violation of the protocol, which, given how much revenue these teams are generating, doesn't make a much of a dent to their bottom line. If the NFL and NFLPA want franchises to take this seriously, they need to increase this figure quite a bit.
