The New York Rangers reportedly are considering a lot of trade possibilities this offseason as Chris Drury tries to be aggressive to get the team over the hump to win its first championship since 1994, and one of those players who could get traded is captain Jacob Trouba, who was asked to submit his 15-team no-trade list, according to Arthur Staple of The Athletic.

Asking for a 15-team no-trade list is a standard procedure, but the Rangers are listening on Trouba, as his full no-movement clause transitions to the no-trade list with two years left on his deal at $8 million per year.

“Scoop: The Rangers are exploring all of their options this summer as GM Chris Drury remains as aggressive as ever trying to get New York over the hump,” Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports. “One of those options is potentially moving his captain. Trouba also just happens to be dropping down from a full ‘no-movement' clause to a 15-team ‘no-trade' list starting on Monday. Trouba has positive trade equity, despite the cap hit, because the term is so short with two years remaining. Teams crave his intensity, leadership and physicality. Are the Detroit Red Wings, looking to upgrade their blueline, a viable option for the Michigan native? In addition to upgrades up front, the Rangers are also grinding on an extension for Ryan Lindgren, and his initial asks appear to be pretty reasonable.”

The detail about Ryan Lindgren, a restricted free agent, is notable as well, as the Rangers face multiple questions with their defensive group. New York being aggressive is interesting given the cap crunch that they are likely to have over the next two seasons. Drury needs to fill needs at right wing alongside Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, as well as a puck moving defenseman. Offloading Trouba's $8 million would be huge for cap flexibility.

Who could the Rangers pursue this offseason?

If Drury is able to move off of Trouba's contract, even if it is partially retained, it would increase the flexibility to be able to pursue notable free agents. The Rangers have been linked to players like Jake Guentzel, Tyler Toffoli and Patrick Kane ahead of free agency, which opens on July 1.

Jake Guentzel would be a big get, but would be pricey. It would likely require offloading of some money, like with a Trouba trade, or even a trade of Kaapo Kakko. Tyler Toffoli will not get the same amount of money as Guentzel, but it would still likely require some kind of maneuvering from Drury to fit him in.

The Rangers reportedly are interested in reuniting with Patrick Kane, but it might require him taking a bit of a discount to return to the team that he had a disappointing stint with in 2023.

Drury has a track record of making surprise moves, so we will see if he has some kind of trade in the works ahead of the draft this weekend and free agency next week.
