The Edmonton Oilers saw their season come to an end after getting swept by the Colorado Avalanche in the Western Conference Finals. Despite an improbably deep run in the playoffs, the Oilers will be back at the drawing board in the offseason looking to make the necessary adjustments in order to make a Stanley Cup run. The goalie position will certainly be put under the microscope this offseason, and veteran netminder Mike Smith got brutally honest on his future in Edmonton following the Oilers' season-ending loss on Monday night.
Via Daniel Nugent Bowman, Smith revealed that this past season was “challenging” and that he “doesn't know” where he'll be four months from now.
Mike Smith called this season “challenging” and “a grind” because of the injuries.
“I don’t know where I’m going to be four months from now.”
Smith has another year left on his contract but was non-committal about playing next season.

Smith has one more year remaining on his contract and is due to pocket $2.5 million in base salary next season. Despite being under contract for the 2022-23 campaign, Smith didn't commit to returning to the Oilers. The 40-year-old could well be considering call it quits and hanging up the skates after a long career. He battled injuries throughout what was ultimately a physically taxing season.
Smith featured in 28 regular-season games for the Oilers this year, registering a .915 save percentage and 2.81 goals allowed per game. He featured in 16 games in the playoffs for Edmonton, but surrendered a playoff-high 49 goals in that span. The Oilers defense was often to blame for opponents getting quality looks on net, but Smith certainly missed a handful of saves that absolutely must have been stopped.
Mikko Koskinen is set to hit free agency, so Smith's decision will be crucial for the Oilers. If the 40-year-old does decide to retire, the Oilers will almost certainly prioritize finding a new goalie in the offseason.
