The New York Rangers continued their winning ways on Saturday, beating the Boston Bruins by the score of 7-4, but defenseman Jacob Trouba garnered a lot of criticism for hitting Trent Frederic in the head with his stick, which resulted in a fine of $5,000. Trouba spoke about the incident on Monday.

“It was an accident, Frederic and I were both surprised, but it can't happen,” Jacob Trouba said, via Larry Brooks of the New York Post. “I have to control my posture and stick. I deserved the fine.”

Trouba went on to say that he did apologize to Trent Frederic during the game.

“I mean it was obviously 100% accidental, at the time I was kind of shocked that it happened, I think Frederic was a little surprised too,” Trouba said, via Brooks. “He was like, ‘Actually that just happened?' And I was like, ‘Sorry, my bad.'”

Although Trouba was fined $5,000 for the incident, many were frustrated that there was not more punishment, or a suspension of some sort.

The Rangers' victory brought them into to a tie for the best record in the league with the Bruins. The two teams look like the class of the eastern conference to this point in the season. The clip of Trouba hitting Frederic with his stick did not circulate until the next day.

While the Rangers took the first matchup of the year, it will be worth watching to see who wins the season series, and if the games are chippy as a result of Trouba's incident with Frederic.
