With the Miami Open set to be the last tournament Novak Djokovic misses due to his decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine, the full financial cost of his controversial move can now be revealed.

In a series of setbacks that began with his deportation from Australia last year that saw him miss out on the first Grand Slam of the year, Djokovic would go on to miss every event in America including the US Open as well as lose his World No. 1 ranking in the process.

The Serbian superstar reclaimed the top spot after winning the Australian Open earlier this year, but is now in danger of losing it again to Carlos Alcaraz after being denied an exemption to enter the United States for Indian Wells and Miami.

With the U.S. lifting its COVID emergency declarations policy that bars unvaccinated foreigners from entering the country on May 11, Miami is expected to be the last tournament that Djokovic misses out on.

With that, we now know the potential earnings Djokovic lost out on from the eight tournaments he has missed since the start of 2022 (via Tennis365):

  • Australian Open 2022 – $1.93m
  • Indian Wells Open 2022 – $1.23m
  • Miami Open 2022 – $1.23m
  • Canadian Open 2022 – $915,295
  • Cincinatti Masters 2022 – $970,020
  • US Open – $2.6m
  • Indian Wells Open 2023 – $1.26m
  • Miami Open 2023 – $1.26m

All in all, that's a total of $11.38 million in prize money.

Of course, there's no guarantee that the 22-time Grand Slam winner would have won all those tournaments, but he definitely would have been a massive favorite to do so. It's a lot of money to miss out on, but like he said last year, it's a price he's willing to pay.

Novak Djokovic will resume his 2023 season at the Monte Carlo Masters which begins Apr. 9.
