On Wednesday night, the Edmonton Oilers announced that they have traded goaltender Alex Stalock to the San Jose Sharks for future considerations. Thus far, the trading frenzy has not kicked into full gear with the NHL trade deadline a little under three weeks away. But Edmonton is clearly looking toward the future, while still maintaining hope for the present.

Stalock missed the entire 2020-2021 season after being diagnosed with Myocarditis, which is inflammation of the middle layer of the heart wall. The Oilers claimed Stalock off waivers in November of 2020. He has appeared in five games this season for the Bakersfield Condors, Edmonton's AHL affiliate. Stalock posted a 3-1-0 record in those appearances.

The Sharks are dealing with injuries to goalies James Reimer and Adin Hill. Reimer left Tuesday's game with a lower body injury. This trade likely means he will miss some time. The only healthy goaltender on their roster was Zachary Sawchenko, who has barely played this season. So, the move makes a lot of sense for San Jose.

Stalock was initially drafted by the Sharks in the fourth round in the 2005 NHL Draft. He spent five seasons with San Jose, making 62 appearances and 46 starts. He then spent four seasons with the Minnesota Wild where he really stood out. Stalock brings his career 2.61 GAA to San Jose, and appears to be looking at some playing time.
