Myles Turner and the Indiana Pacers have had an awkward relationship as of late, as the Pacers big man recently voiced out his frustrations with his role on the team. In an article posted by The Athletic, Turner said it was evident that the Pacers organization does not value him as anything more than a “glorified role player,” and that Turner himself wanted to maximize his opportunity on the team and the amount of work he has put in. The next night, after the Pacers rocked the Dallas Mavericks 106-93, Turner cleared the air and provided more context behind the words that took the Hoosier State by storm.
In a post-game interview, Turner and the press seemed to be hesitantly approaching the matter, until Turner was asked about his words. The Pacers big man would go on to explain what he felt, and how he understood things to be.
Via James Boyd of The Indianapolis Star:
“I'm no different than any one of y'all in here doing y'all's job, correct? I would like to think that y'all think that y'all good at y'all jobs or damn good at y'all jobs at that. You don't want to stay consistent at the same exact thing, going for four, five, six years. Eventually you're gonna want to move up, whether it be a promotion, whether it be a senior writer or (however) it works out. It's the same thing, how I addressed it. It's not like me saying, ‘I'm demanding a trade.' It's not like me saying, ‘Get somebody else out here.' It's none of that. All that was me saying that I know my worth. I hold myself to a high regard, and I expressed that.”
Undeniably, Turner has been having a hell of a season, averaging 13.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, and an eye-catching 2.7 blocks per contest over Indiana's first 28 games. Nevertheless, it was the trade rumors and the Pacers' alleged willingness to shop Turner and other Pacers pieces around the league that made the defensive standout say his piece in the first place. While Turner may have cleared the air, the fact of the matter is that what the Indiana Pacers will be doing in the near future is still extremely hazy.
