In the days leading up to the Week 5 matchup against the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers a bit banged up at the wide receiver position with each of their top wide receiver options in DaVante Adams, Randall Cobb, and Geronimo Allison each dealing with nagging injuries.

This has put the Packers a potentially tough position in the passing game with their primary each possibly being limited or out of the lineup come Sunday afternoon. According to Ryan Wood of Green Bay Press-Gazette, head coach Mike McCarthy indicated on Thursday morning that Ty Montgomery could see more time at the wide receiver spot.

In the last couple of years, the Packers have been utilizing Montgomery in a more of a versatile role with him playing out of the backfield along with being a factor in the passing game lined up outside. Although injuries have impacted his availability on the field, he could be in line for a significant role against the Lions with their weapons in the passing game being largely limited by injuries over the last few days of practice this week.

Montgomery has been sparsely used as a receiving option this year as he has 11 catches on 15 targets for 135 receiving yards through the first four games played. He has been primarily used in the backfield as a running back with 72 rushing yards on 16 attempts this year. Montgomery has plenty of experience playing at wide receiver throughout early goings of his career, which could set the table for a huge performance for him to help push the Packers toward grabbing their second straight win.

These next couple of days of practice will be largely indicative of the status of their top three targets in the passing game. If there is any hindrance from that group, the Packers appear more than confident to role with Montgomery as a primary receiving option.
