There are a lot of rumors swirling about Josh McDaniels becoming the Green Bay Packers' next head coach, but former New England Patriots executive Mike Lombardi isn't sold that this will happen. During his latest edition of The Ringer's GM Street podcast, Lombardi explained why he doesn't think McDaniels necessarily wants to go to Green Bay, and a big reason is his relationship with Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst.

“Is that something Josh McDaniels would want? I don’t know,” Lombardi said, as transcribed by WEEI.com. “Josh McDaniels thought when he went to San Francisco perhaps he would take [general manager Brian] Gutekunst with him as his personnel director, so they kind of know each other. There is a relationship there. However, with that being said, is Murphy going to allow Josh McDaniels to come in and run the Patriot Way? Is he going to allow him to come in and establish what he wants up there? And does Gutekunst understand what that is. There is a lot of moving pieces here and the trigger here is the guy that is hiring you isn’t the guy you’re working side-by-side with.”

Lombardi also thinks McDaniels might have some pressure from Robert Kraft to stay after he dished out a nice extension last year to keep him from leaving to become head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Lombardi also wonders if McDaniels wants to uproot his family to move from a bigger city like Boston to Green Bay,

When McDaniels was asked about the rumors on Tuesday, he largely deflected the questions, but this is something that will probably pick up steam over the next few weeks when the season ends.
