The Green Bay Packers failed in their attempt to salvage a lost 2017 NFL season after missing the playoffs for the first time in eight years. At the center of their midseason struggles was the underwhelming performance of quarterback Brett Hundley.

As a result, there has been some speculation regarding his future in Green Bay. However, head coach Mike McCarthy still has faith in Hundley's ability as the backup behind quarterback Aaron Rodgers, via ESPN.com:

“I believe in Brett Hundley,” McCarthy said. “I do fully recognize that he has a lot of football in front of him. He has a big upside. Our structure and our coaching staff, we need to make sure we maximize that, but we also need to learn from the other parts of the offense that we didn’t do as good as we would have liked, and we’ll learn from that platform. I do believe Brett has a big upside, and looking forward to getting back to work with him.”

The injury to Rodgers early on gave Hundley a chance to prove his bones as a legitimate NFL quarterback. Unfortunately, his play under center largely fluctuated throughout the season as he threw for 1,836 yards, nine touchdowns, and 12 interceptions.

However, Hundley was hardly to blame for the entirety of Green Bay's struggles. Rodgers' absence shined a light on the lack of talent currently on the team. As a result, Hundley's struggles were a further extension of that which may be why McCarthy is so inclined to keep him around for the time being. That said, he will certainly need to start showing signs of improvement otherwise it could only be a matter of time before they choose to go in a different direction.
