It became clear that the Green Bay Packers had some seriousness player personnel issues that were brought to light as a result of the injury to quarterback Aaron Rodgers. As a result, rumors have swirled about the uncertain futures of wide receivers Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb as we head into the offseason toward free agency.
Nelson and Cobb are among the notable names whose time could be up in Green Bay after a lackluster year. However, a new report suggests that Rodgers will not be so quick to let them go, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports:
“While you could make the case for the Packers moving on from either receiver Jordy Nelson or Randall Cobb, I wouldn't bet on it. “Rodgers is back healthy, he got the GM in the seat that he wanted, and he loves both of those receivers,” said one exec with ties to that organization. “He'll make it clear he doesn't want to lose them. I don't think they're going anywhere.”
The report should come as little surprise considering Rodgers' connection to Nelson and Cobb. Both players have served as his primary receivers for quite some time now. It seems the prospect of both of them being released in one offseason would be too much to bear for the elite quarterback.
Regardless, there are still plenty of reasons that would warrant the Packers' decision to part ways. Although both are proven Pro Bowl-caliber wideouts, they were virtually non-existent in last year's passing game once Rodgers broke his collarbone.
Meanwhile, wide receiver Davante Adams has established himself as the team's primary option moving forward. That said, perhaps Rodgers could convince the front office to keep at least one of them as a veteran safety net for Rodgers, especially with his upcoming contract extension discussions. Green Bay knows they have to keep #12 happy.
