The latest Fernando Tatis Jr injury news does not bode well for the Padres. Tatis Jr, who injured himself in a motorcycle incident over the offseason, has reportedly not been cleared to swing a bat yet.

Padres manager Bob Melvin commented on the situation.

“We’re not quite there yet. So no bat in his hands at this point, but hopefully sooner than later.”

The other thing to consider is that Tatis Jr has no clear timetable. His initial return date was sometime in June. But that was cloudy as well. However, it is still unclear with June right around the corner.

Even once he is cleared to start swinging a bat, Tatis Jr will still need time to get back in baseball shape. Then he will need to play in multiple rehab games. The Padres are hopeful he can return in June, but a July date seems just as likely.

The Padres have played well despite Fernando Tatis Jr's injury. Manny Machado has stepped up in a major way and would likely win the NL MVP if the season ended today. San Diego holds one of the best records in the National League and narrowly trail the Dodgers in the NL West.

One thing for Padres fans to keep in mind is that San Diego faltered in the second half of last year. But that seems unlikely in 2022. Tatis Jr's return, whenever that may be, will provide a boost in San Diego's clubhouse.

It wouldn't be surprising to see them play even better in the second half of the season. So there is light at the end of the tunnel.
