The San Diego Padres have acquired second baseman Jurickson Profar in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, according to independent baseball writer Robert Murray.

ESPN's Jeff Passan has more details:

Profar is coming off a 2019 campaign in which he slashed .218/.301/.410 with 20 home runs and 67 RBI over 518 plate appearances.

The 26-year-old, who came up as a shortstop and was once one of the top prospects in all of baseball, originally signed with the Texas Rangers as an amateur free agent back in July 2009.

He made his big-league debut in 2012, playing in nine games. The following year, the Rangers gave him more extensive playing time, as he appeared in 85 contests and slashed .234/.308/.336 with six long balls and 26 RBI across 324 trips to the dish.

Shoulder injuries then wiped out two seasons for Profar in 2014 and 2015, as the Curacao native did not appear in the majors again until 2016. That year, he participated in 90 games and registered a disappointing slash line of .239/.321/.338 with five dingers and 20 RBI through 307 plate appearances.

Profar was then limited to just 22 games in 2017, as he continued to underwhelm by slashing .172/.294/.207 in 70 trips to the plate. Finally, in 2018, Profar demonstrated signs of a breakthrough, slashing .254/.335/.458 with 20 homers, 35 doubles and 77 RBI over 594 plate appearances. But that ensuing offseason, Texas traded Profar to the Athletics.

In spite of his improvement over the last couple of seasons, Profar is still largely a major bust given how highly he was touted while coming through the Rangers' farm system.

Still, it's rare for a second baseman to have 20-homer power, which is why he has some value, albeit limited. The Padres are hoping Profar can continue showing improvement moving forward.
