The San Diego Padres have not been able to stay afloat in MLB postseason berth contention. They sit third in the NL West standings. The squad is still trying their best to catch up to the tight race to the top against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and San Francisco Giants. But, the journey will now be harder as Bob Melvin and the team placed Yu Darvish and Joe Musgrove on their injured reserved list.

Yu Darvish is still nursing an elbow inflammation on his right hand which he uses when pitching. This prompted the Bob Melvin-led Padres to call up Matt Waldron from their Triple-A squad.

San Diego may have lost to the Giants but there is a silver lining. Yu Darvish's injury recovery is looking fast. The 37-year-old pitcher for the Padres has put out his intentions to pitch for the remainder of the MLB season, per AJ Cassavell of the MLB.

Joe Musgrove is also on his way back to the squad for the remaining MLB games. He has been playing light catch which is a good sign in his recovery. Notably, he suffered a right shoulder capsule inflammation and has not yet made the transition to pitching again.

All of these moves are raising the eyebrows of fans. This is because most of them think that postseason berth contention would be too steep of an uphill battle. A common sentiment would be that they just rest both players and hope for a good MLB draft pick.
