Cam Newton failed to carry the Carolina Panthers past the Los Angeles Rams to open the 2019 season. However, he managed to find some positives in the game when it came to Christian McCaffrey's performance.

Newton talked to the press about the team's state recently. He answered questions about the team's performance in the team opener and their coming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

He admitted that McCaffrey had a superb game for the Panthers. He also joked around that there was a special reason for the running back's superb performance in the season's opening game.

“I think coach has got C-Mac up for fantasy this week,” Newton said, per Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith. “He picked C-Mac for fantasy. I should have went over and seen who he was drafting in his league. That’s probably why we aren’t doing deep passes. He should pick me first quarterback.”

There's a reason why Newton made quips like that. McCaffrey performed well both on the running and passing games. He carried the ball 19 times for 128 yards and two rushing TDs. He also caught the ball ten times for 81 yards and two receiving TDs.

Meanwhile, Newton openly admitted to Panthers' Bill Voth that he was rusty in the team's narrow 27-30 defeat to the Rams.

“(I was) a little rusty. Just have to get on the same page with everybody,” Newton admitted after the Panthers’ season-opening loss to the Rams.

“I wish I could have a couple throws back.”

However, that game is now in the past. All he can do is look forward and make a statement against the Bucs. A W against Tampa Bay will erase the bitter taste of their loss.
