The Carolina Panthers have claimed wide receiver Donte Moncrief off waivers, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.
Moncrief began the 2019 campaign with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was expected to be the team's No. 2 receiver behind JuJu Smith-Schuster. However, things did not exactly work out that way.
Moncrief struggled mightily in Week 1, logging just three catches for seven yards on 10 targets. Since then, he had been targeted just five times, and on the season overall, he has tallied just four grabs for 18 yards.
The 26-year-old, who played his collegiate football at the University of Mississippi, was originally selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the third round (90th pick overall) of the 2014 NFL Draft.
He played in all 16 games during his rookie year, finishing with 32 catches for 444 yards and three touchdowns. He then had a breakout season of sorts in 2015, hauling in 64 receptions for 733 yards and six scores.
Injuries then limited Moncrief in 2016 and 2017, as he played in nine and 12 games, respectively, those two seasons.
The Raleigh, Ms. native proceeded to link up with the Jacksonville Jaguars for one year in 2018 and had a bit of a resurgence, participating in every game and snaring 48 balls for 668 yards while reaching the end zone three times.
Obviously, he was not able to replicate his success with the Steelers, as rookie wide out Diontae Johnson quickly passed him on the depth chart.
The Panthers just improved to 5-3 with their win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday and will head on the road to take on the Green Bay Packers next Sunday.
