Free-agent quarterback Cam Newton is still without a home after he was released by the New England Patriots. It appears he could potentially run it back with the team where he became a star, the Carolina Panthers.
According to the Charlotte Observer, the team will meet with Newton on Thursday as their QB struggles continue. Sam Darnold hasn't exactly adapted to life in Carolina while most recently dealing with a shoulder problem and it's clear the Panthers need to bring in another signal-caller. Newton could be a worthy candidate.
While he had success with the organization under a different coach, the veteran brings boatloads of experience to the table and a winning mentality. The Panthers drafted Newton first overall in the 2011 draft and he went on to spend nine seasons with the franchise before his release in 2020.
Coming back to where it all began could be what Newton needs to revive his career. He's arguably the most polarizing quarterback in Panthers history and even won the MVP in 2015 after leading the team to the Super Bowl and a 15-1 record.
Further testing revealed that Darnold has an incomplete fracture in his shoulder blade, while P.J. Walker has limited experience as a starter. It's clear that Carolina needs someone else to come in and Newton could very well be the perfect man for the job.
The Panthers are currently 4-5 and just got Christian McCaffrey back from injury. They face the 8-1 Arizona Cardinals in Week 10.
