Carolina Panthers linebacker Shaq Thompson has officially been placed on injured reserve due to an ongoing shoulder injury.

Thompson has apparently been dealing with the shoulder issues throughout the season, but that hasn't stopped him from playing in every game to this point in the season.

The former Washington star has been played a considerable role in the Carolina defense since entering the league in 2015, and he notched career highs with 79 combined tackles and 3.5 sacks this year.

Unfortunately, he won't get an opportunity to add to those numbers this season after the team announced that he was headed to injured reserve.

Of course, this move comes a day after the Panthers decided to shut down star quarterback Cam Newton for the season due to his own shoulder issues.

With Carolina now riding a six-game losing streak following an excellent 6-2 start to the season, there isn't much to play for in the final two games of the regular season. So, it makes sense that the franchise would be cautious with some of its top playmakers.

The Panthers just haven't been the same following a 52-21 defeat at the hands of the Pittsburgh Steelers back in Week 10, and that has resulted in one of the most disappointing stretches of games in franchise history.

Next up for the team is a matchup with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday before finishing up the regular season with a rematch against the Saints in New Orleans.

But with several key players sidelined, it could be difficult for the Panthers to stop the slide.
