The Carolina Panthers ushered in some significant changes to both their roster and coaching staff this offseason. This all culminated with their decision to part ways with quarterback Cam Newton.

The Panthers opted to cut Newton in an effort to continue kickstarting their rebuild with his replacement in former New Orleans Saints backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater.

Head coach Matt Rhule feels Bridgewater's fit in the offense and his connection with offensive coordinator Joe Brady was among the deciding factors, via NFL Update:

“That was a difficult decision. Cam is a great quarterback. Teddy was just a good fit for this offense.” He also mentioned Joe Brady's relationship with Bridgewater is a benefit.

The Panthers were mired by their struggled under center en route to a 5-11 finish during the 2019 campaign. This was highlighted by Newton's lingering foot injury that ultimately limited him to just the first two games. the looming questions about his health seemingly played a huge factor in the team's decision to cut him.

It is safe to say that this may also be the reason that Newton remains on the market this late into free agency. A quarterback with his resume will surely garner a lucrative price tag, however, it remains to be seen if he will be healthy enough to provide a team with any bang for their buck.

Meanwhile, Rhule is confident that Bridgewater is more than capable of taking over under center in his and Brady's new scheme. After all, the Panthers witnessed him lead their NFC South rival to a 5-0 record last year and are hoping his winning approach can help spark a potential resurgence.
