The New England Patriots appear to have a potential concern on their hands with quarterback Tom Brady dealing with a right-hand injury that he suffered in practice on Tuesday.

In wake of Brady not taking the practice field on Thursday, it has brought forth the possibility of backup Brian Hoyer getting the start in the AFC Championship Game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to Zach Cox of NESN, Hoyer also acknowledged that while he is prepared for any situation, he believes it's best that he isn't asked to play.

“I prepare every week like I’m going to play,” Hoyer said, via Zack Cox of NESN. “Whether I do or don’t, that’s not really up to me. I think the one thing that I can benefit from is since I was here as the backup last time, I’ve played a lot of football. I’ve been the starter on three different teams. I know how to prepare as a starter. And whether I’m getting those reps or not, each rep that I’m not getting, I’m taking as a mental rep.

“I’m always preparing to play, because the truth of reality is, you never know when you’re name’s going to be called. So I think if anything, having been a backup, having been a starter, now being in the backup role [again], I know how to prepare like I’m going to play. And if I don’t play, then that’s good for our team. If I do, then I’m ready to go.”

It is not a strike against his ability on the field, but an obvious realization that Brady gives the Patriots the best chance to win. He is still playing at a high level coming off another MVP-caliber campaign and a strong outing in the convincing divisional round win over the Tennessee Titans.

There may be some level of concern around Brady's hand injury given that he sat out practice on Thursday, it seems to be a simple maintenance thing that will allow him to get some rest. There have been instances throughout this season where the 40-year-old has missed a day or two of practices.

This has only been amplified given that it's ahead of the AFC Championship game and that he is now wearing a glove on the practice field to protect it. Ultimately, it's something that should receive much clarity on Brady's status by Friday.
