The future of Cam Newton with the New England Patriots remains unclear.
The Patriots quarterback was asked Thursday about his feeling regarding a possible return under center next year. Newton diplomatically answered the question by saying he was looking forward to competing against the Buffalo Bills:
“I think the biggest thing is I’m just trying to maximize on the things that I know I have to prove. And that’s starting with Monday,” Patriots QB Cam Newton said Thursday, via Andrew Callahan of the Boston Herald. “That’s simple. I play this game for one reason, and that’s just to win. And we have an opportunity to win on Monday. Let’s just see how that goes.”
New England took a chance on the former league MVP after he was cut by the Carolina Panthers this past March.
Newton took a cheap, incentivized one-year deal to join the Pats, also immediately earning the opportunity to replace longtime signal-caller Tom Brady after Brady signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Cam looked especially excellent in his first two outings, with four rushing touchdowns and a 397-yard passing performance in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.
The Patriots jumped out to a 2-1 start. But things have not quite been the same since Newton contracted COVID-19 ahead of Week 4. The former No. 1 overall pick has thrown for more than 200 yards just three times, also throwing eight interceptions against just three touchdowns.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and offensive Josh McDaniels have both issued statements of support for Newton. For his part, Cam is still hoping to play in 2021.
Whether Newton will be playing with the Pats remains to be seen.
