The departure of long-time New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady left a big hole for the team to fill. Fans thought that the starting role would be a toss-up between sophomore Jarrett Stidham and returning veteran Brian Hoyer. However, the arrival of the 2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton made the competition more interesting.

Hoyer voiced out his approach towards the current situation in the Patriots' quarterback room:

“Look, I think coach [Bill] Belichick says every position is a competition no matter what it is every year,” Hoyer said on WEEI. “So I think for me, I know going in that I am always going to compete like I am trying to be the starting quarterback. I did that when Tom was here. I know that was never going to happen because of who he was, but that pushed me to be better. Adding another great quarterback like Cam to the room, it only makes us that much more competitive and that is going to bring out the best in all of us.”

Indeed, a player with the magnitude of Cam Newton always has the potential to shake things up. His veteran experience immediately puts him heads and shoulders above the rest of the competition.

However, his playmaking skills were never put into question. It was his durability and fit on the Patriots' offensive schemes that will ultimately dictate if he will be playing under center all throughout the upcoming season.

On the other hand, Stidham and Hoyer will need to do the right things and prove their capabilities to Belichick in order to potentially pose a threat to Newton for the starting role.
