Cam Newton is back with the Carolina Panthers, and this move actually helps the New England Patriots. Newton's deal is worth up to $10 million for the rest of the season and includes $4.5 million in guaranteed money and a $1.5 million signing bonus, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

How does this help the Patriots, you ask? Well, Newton's Panthers deal clears $1.5 million in cap space for New England in 2022. While that's not a whole lot, every little bit counts, so Bill Belichick should be happy about that.

Newton was of course released by the Patriots before this season after returning on a one-year deal. The veteran quarterback had his moments with the team in 2020, but the decision was ultimately made to go with rookie Mac Jones in 2021. There was also some controversy about Newton's COVID-19 vaccination status, though he's vaccinated now.

The Panthers are hoping Newton can help them out amid their disastrous quarterback situation. After starting the season off hot, Sam Darnold totally regressed and then suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out for an extended time. Carolina also has P.J. Walker and Matt Barkley as part of its quarterback room. The expectations shouldn't be too high for Newton to be some kind of savior, but the 4-5 Panthers are still in the playoff race and need a jolt.

We'll see if Newton provides it, but either way, the Patriots are getting some help.
