The New England Patriots have to move on without Tom Brady. According to one NFL insider, their starting quarterback job is in favor of the veteran.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Patriots will likely go with Brian Hoyer as the starting quarterback for the 2020 season. The 34-year-old veteran is expected to compete with second-year QB Jarrett Stidham for the starting job during training camp.

However, he does warn that the QB situation could easily change throughout the duration of the 2020 season. In other words, Rapoport seems to indicate that Hoyer will be the starter for Week 1.

Via WEEI:

“My guess right now is Brian Hoyer is the starting quarterback of the Patriots in 2020. But I think that is something that will be ever-evolving as we get through next season,” Rapoport said.

Hoyer was re-signed by the Patriots just days after Brady made his decision to sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The veteran quarterback originally signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent back in 2009. He was released by New England in 2012. He then became a starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans a couple of years later. In fact, he led the Texans to a postseason berth during the 2015 season.

He re-signed with the Patriots in 2017 after starting six games for the San Francisco 49ers. He once again served as Brady's backup.

It's worth noting that Rapoport did mention that the Patriots are still likely to use a premium pick on a QB in the 2020 NFL Draft.

“The Patriots are going to take a quarterback, probably with a premium pick. I would just imagine it’s not at a pick they currently have.”

Considering Bill Belichick's penchant for making unpredictable personnel decisions, it's anybody's guess as to who will win the starting QB job.

Whether it's Hoyer, Stidham or a rookie QB who starts Week 1, the starting QB job may be a revolving door throughout the season.
