Cam Newton remains unsigned in free agency, with the New England Patriots constantly being linked as possible suitors for the veteran quarterback. In an article by Michael Lombardi of The Athletic, he exclaims that the ‘timing is not right' for Newton to sign with New England.

Of course, the Patriots are preparing for life after Tom Brady, after he signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Without Brady on the roster, New England is left with Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer.

It's evident that the Patriots are confident in Stidham, choosing not to sign or draft a quarterback this offseason. Regardless of their confidence in Stidham, New England is regarded as a team that could pursue Newton.

However, there are a couple of things preventing that from happening. First and foremost, New England is unable to bring Newton in for a proper physical due to the coronavirus. In addition, it is going to be tough making a deal for Newton work financially.

As Lombardi points out, the Patriots have dead-cap money tied to Brady, Antonio Brown, and Stephen Gostkowski. None of those guys remain with the team, but New England still owes them money. Given that, the Patriots are currently limited in financial resources until next offseason.

If healthy, Newton would be a massive upgrade over what the Patriots currently have at quarterback. But unless Newton is willing to take a similar deal to Jameis Winston, New England likely can't sign him. It's safe to say that the Patriots would express more interest in Newton if it weren't for all of the unfortunate circumstances this offseason.
