It seems like the one-year pact between New England Patriots and star quarterback Cam Newton won't extend beyond the 2020 season. While reporting at Sunday NFL Countdown, ESPN's Adam Schefter said that Newton and the Patriots, despite having a good relationship, are expected to part ways in the off-season.

Via Tim Daniels of Bleacher Report:

“It looks like [Cam Newton's] looking for something different, the Patriots are looking for something different. Both sides enjoyed their relationship, but both sides expect that it will take them to a different place and a different direction in 2021, with Cam Newton likely moving on and the Patriots in search of a new quarterback for next season.”

This season certainly hasn't gone the way the Pats envisioned it when they signed Newton in July 2020. New England expected the former league MVP to fill in the void left by ex-quarterback star Tom Brady after the 6-time Super Bowl champion shockingly left for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the off-season.

This has been a rollercoaster campaign for Newton, who even saw himself test positive for the coronavirus midway through the season. Newton also expressed his regret on not taking the time in the off-season to learn about Bill Belichick's off-season.

With both sides looking to go the different direction after a disappointing 2020 campaign together, Newton likely won't get a chance to right the wrongs in his lone season with the Patriots.

If this is indeed the end of their one-year partnership, New England will need to look a for a replacement at quarterback. Meanwhile, Newton should still get decent attention in the open market. However, his recent injuries and slight drop off should be a concern on the back of the heads of most teams looking to sign him.
