It’s been more than a year since Isaiah Thomas last played in the NBA, but his return and debut for his new team would have to wait for at least a few more days. It was reported by Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated that Thomas would not play for the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday against the Houston Rockets as he continues to clear the league’s health and safety protocols.

Thomas will join the Pelicans on Monday after signing a 10-day contract with the team on Saturday.

With a 21-27 record and the 12th spot in the Western Conference, New Orleans is three games behind a playoff spot and has lost its last two games. The addition of Thomas would have been welcome news for head coach Stan Van Gundy, as the Pelicans have been dealing with injuries to several of their key players.

The team is currently missing All-Stars Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram, while guards Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart, and rookie Kira Lewis have all been out in their recent games and are questionable to play against the Rockets.

Thomas hasn’t played in the league in more than a year, but he has suited up for Team USA since, helping the national team to wins over Bahamas and Mexico last month. The 32-year-old’s most recent stint in the NBA came last season with the Washington Wizards, where he averaged 12.2 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 3.7 assists while shooting 40.8% from the field.

When he eventually plays for the Pelicans, the two-time All-Star will wear jersey number 24 as a tribute to the late Kobe Bryant, who wore the number during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers.
