New Orleans Pelicans rookie star Zion Williamson has been announced as one of the cover athletes of the popular basketball video game NBA 2K21.

This comes soon after Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard was named the franchise's cover athlete of the year. Williamson's cover will be displayed in next-generation consoles like PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X, both scheduled to launch around the holidays later this year.

Williamson was the player shown in NBA2K21's reveal trailer, showing an improved graphics processor with very realistic textures. That short video led fans to believe the Pelicans rookie will be the next cover athlete — and they were partially right, despite 2K Sports' efforts to keep the reveal under wraps.

With Dame and Zion as cover athletes, more fans of the game are imploring for a cover of the late Kobe Bryant, which seems like a no-brainer decision for the “Legend Edition.”

Dwyane Wade dons the legend edition cover for the current iteration, one of the most popular since the game's genesis more than two decades ago.

Williamson is undoubtedly one of the most popular and sensational players in the NBA today and it's only fitting that he would grace the cover of the next-gen consoles as the best generational talent since LeBron James.

The rookie is averaging 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists in his first season, numbers he will take to Orlando as the NBA attempts to resume the remainder of the regular season at Walt Disney World on July 30.
