The Pittsburgh Penguins tried making changes ahead of Monday night's game to hopefully give them a spark. Unfortunately, it didn't have an immediate effect. Pittsburgh hasn't exactly bottomed out, mind you. But they are sixth in the Metropolitan Division as of this writing. And their loss on Monday night to their division rival Philadelphia Flyers certainly won't help matters.

The Penguins fell in overtime 2-1 on the road. Not only is it their second loss in a row, it's their second straight loss to the Flyers. Pittsburgh has dropped seven of their last 10 games. It's a rough run of form for a team that has every intention of making the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season.

Penguins' Alex Nedeljkovic stands tall

To be fair, it's not like the Penguins played terribly on Monday night. Goalie Alex Nedeljkovic certainly held up his end of the bargain. The Ohio native made 31 saves in the loss to Philadelphia, with some of those saves being highway robberies. His inspiring play didn't go unnoticed, either

“Ned was phenomenal,” veteran Penguins forward Bryan Rust said, via the team's official website. “We gave up far too many really nice looks, as you guys saw. He made some really good saves on every single one except for that last one.”

Rust continued with a laugh, saying a save on the last shot would have been a miracle. “But he was phenomenal all night,” the Pittsburgh veteran said after the loss on Monday night.

The Penguins have to turn things around sooner rather than later. Especially if they want to contend for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Their next chance to right the ship comes on Wednesday when they travel to take on the Tampa Bay Lightning.
