The Philadelphia Phillies have officially started the Bryce Harper experiment at first base. The Phillies superstar made his debut at the position on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians. After playing as the designated hitter on Saturday, Harper returned to first base on Sunday.

With two games under his belt, Phillies manager Rob Thomson has had a chance to get a feel of what Harper brings to his new position. And he shared his early assessment with MLB.com on Sunday. “He’s an athlete, and he’s a baseball player,” the Phillies skipper said. “He watches the game, he’s a student. … He looks like he’s been there before.”

To Thomson's point, Harper has made a few nice plays in these last two games. On Friday, he went over the infield fence to catch a foul ball, for example. He has looked comfortable in his new position. A comfort level he attributes to the work he put in prior to officially playing first base.

“We’ve put in a lot of work,” Harper said, via MLB.com. “Me and [infield coach Bobby Dickerson], every single day, just trying to play the best first base I can over there for the guys around me.”

Harper also continues to contribute offensively, as well. On Sunday, he broke a tie game in the top of the 10th with an RBI single. That was the first of three runs scored by the Phillies in that inning. Philadelphia held onto the lead, winning 8-5 over the Guardians.

Harper certainly looks to get more reps at first base as the season continues to roll on. Perhaps a few of those reps come in Philadelphia's next series against the Baltimore Orioles beginning on Tuesday.
