The Detroit Pistons will likely be active at the upcoming NBA Trade Deadline. Detroit is in rebuild mode, and Jerami Grant is being shopped around the league. Grant has intrigued multiple teams around the league as he is a great three and d wing.
He has been out with torn ligaments in his thumb but is expected to return soon. Before his injury, he was averaging 20.1 points per game along with 4.8 rebounds. He is shooting 41.4 from the field and 33.1 percent from three.
Grant will be the big trade piece for the Pistons, and they could get significant value from him.
The Pistons are 11-37 on the season, which puts them in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. At the deadline, they will be selling Grant to continue their rebuild, which is a necessary step to getting back to being a competitive team in the near future.
Biggest need the Pistons have to address
With Detroit in a rebuild, trading their veteran players should be done to acquire more young talent and draft picks. Rebuilding teams don't have the same needs to address as a contender, who could be looking to add a wing to put them over the top. They have a solid foundation with their future star in number one overall pick Cade Cunningham. Cunningham is averaging 16 points per game along with 5.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists.
While he is the future star, Detroit also has excellent young talent on the rest of the roster. They have Killian Hayes, Saben Lee, Josh Jackson, Saddiq Bey, Hamidou Diallo, and Isaiah Stewart, who are all 24 or younger.
Although they have a young roster, adding more young players and future draft picks to continue rebuilding for the future.
The Pistons are set to be in the draft lottery and get another top pick in the draft. Making a deal with a team interested in Grant would give them more draft picks and potentially young talent. The Los Angeles Lakers have dropped out of the Grant sweepstakes as he doesn't want to be a scoring option behind LeBron James and Anthony Davis. However, other teams like the Sacramento Kings, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers are all reportedly interested.
Detroit is in a great spot in their rebuild as they can draft the best player available. Ideally, he would be a great fit with Cunningham, who has had a strong rookie campaign. He is a great scorer and a solid rebounder and passer. Another bright spot for them has been Bey, who is averaging 15.3 points per game and 5.8 rebounds. He can be an excellent wing for them for the future of the franchise.
Stewart has also been solid at the starting center spot for the Pistons. He is averaging 7.8 points per game paired with 7.8 rebounds. Stewart has also shown his defensive potential, blocking 1.2 shots per game. Over the next few seasons, finding a playmaking point guard and a three and d power forward would put them in position to be a contender. These next few years and moves are going to be crucial for the future of the team.
Detroit has not made the postseason since the 2018-19 season and is multiple years away from making it again. However, Pistons fans should appreciate watching their young core grow as they have a bright future ahead.
