Detroit Pistons forward Blake Griffin posted a humorous Instagram tribute for now-Cleveland Cavaliers center Andre Drummond. In exchange for the big man, the Pistons received guard Brandon Knight, backup center John Henson, and a 2023 second-round draft pick.

Griffin wished for his Pistons teammate of two years “nothing but the best.” The 30-year-old also reiterated the impact Drummond had for the Pistons, even off the court. He added how proud he was of his teammate, before finishing off with a joke, “Oh and if you ever try to dunk on me I will flagrant 1 you.”

The two were teammates with the Pistons for three NBA seasons. The Los Angeles Clippers had traded Griffin midway through the 2017-18 season. Immediately a season after, the high-flying forward made his way back to the All-Star game, now representing his new team. He has played 18 games this season, averaging a career-low 15.5 points, but is now indefinitely out with left knee surgery.

Drummond, on the other hand, is as consistent as ever, averaging a career-high 17.8 points. More importantly, however, he is still the rebounding leader at 15.8 per game. With the last-minute deal, he’s tasked to inject life into the 13-39 team. The all-around center will start alongside Kevin Love, with Tristan Thompson now expected to deliver off the bench.

According to Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, Love acknowledged that he’s “not the high-wire act” that Griffin is. However, the 6’8” forward reiterated that he and Drummond will work with something new.

Consequently, many now wonder as to what the Pistons plans are. With their long-time center gone and an All-Star forward out, it would seem a heavy task to improve a 19-35 season.
