Detroit Pistons rookie Cade Cunningham hasn't exactly gotten off to the best start to begin his NBA career. He suffered an ankle injury in training camp that kept him sidelined for the entire preseason and it appears his status for the season opener is in serious doubt as well. Considering he's not even a full participant in Pistons practice yet, it's unlikely he plays on Wednesday against the Chicago Bulls. The 2020 first overall pick is expected to be a franchise-changing player for Detroit, but we've yet to really see what he's capable of.

However, the former Oklahoma State star did impress in three Summer League games, averaging 18.7 points and 5.7 rebounds on 43% shooting from the field. Pistons head coach Dwane Casey gave some insight on Cunningham's recovery following practice on Sunday. Via Michigan Live:

“He’s on course, we’re gonna wait,” Casey said. “We’re gonna hold out. Hold out hope but again he’s on course. One thing, we’re not going to do, if he’s not 100%, we’re not going to rush him back out there wait and he gets re-injured and be off more time. But we’ll see where everyone is by Wednesday, and make that proclamation come Wednesday.”

There certainly is no point in rushing his rehab. After all, it's not like the Pistons are going to be a playoff team this season anyway. Getting Cunnigham back to full strength is the top priority so another injury doesn't happen.
