The Purdue basketball team lost their top commit in their 2024 recruiting class on Thursday as four-star Kanon Catchings was released from his National Letter of Intent. The Boilermakers still have five commits in the class and it is still ranked 16th in the country, but losing their top commit is unfortunate. Catchings is a small forward and he is now opening back up his recruitment. Xavier, Illinois and Indiana are some other teams that were recruiting him hard in the past.
“Kanon Catchings has been released from his National Letter of Intent to Purdue and will reopen his recruitment, he tells @On3Recruits,” Joe Tipton said in a tweet. “The 6-9 small forward is a top-40 recruit in the 2024 class.”
Purdue basketball was one over their scholarship limit, so that issue has been resolved, but this certainly isn't the way that the Boilermakers fans were hoping to solve that issue.
“Purdue's highest-rated recruit opening up late,” Kevin Sweeney said in a tweet. “Boilers had been one over the scholarship limit, but not sure anyone expected this would be how that would be resolved… significant blow.”
Kanon Catchings is ranked as the #40 player in the 2024 recruiting class according to 247 Sports. He is the #8 PF and the #3 player in the state of Georgia. He played for Overtime Elite in Atlanta, Georgia.
Now, Catchings is no longer a Purdue basketball commit, and he has to make up his mind about where he wants to play next season. He doesn't have a lot of time, so his recruitment will likely move pretty quickly.
Purdue basketball still has a good 2024 recruiting class

Losing Kanon Catchings is unfortunate for Purdue basketball, but they still have a good 2024 recruiting class coming in. The Boilermakers made it all the way to the national title game last year, and they want to keep that momentum going. Recruiting is the way for them to do that, and the 2024 class is still in good shape.
After losing Catchings, Purdue still has five commitments in the class. The Boilermakers have landed commitments from two four-stars and three three-stars.
The four-star commits that Purdue has are Daniel Jacobsen and Gicarri Harris. Jacobsen is the 11th bets center in the class of 2024, and Harris is the #10 combo guard in the class of 2024.
The three-star commits that Purdue has are Raleigh Burgess, CJ Cox and Jack Benter. Burgess is the 25th ranked center in the 2024 class, Cox is the 37th ranked CG and Benter is the 50th ranked shooting guard.
All in all, it is a solid class and it ranked #16 in the country and it is third in the Big Ten. Now that the conference has UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington, there is more competition, and a few of those schools have had a good amount of recent basketball success. It is definitely going to make the conference title harder to win.
At the end of the day, the 2024 Purdue basketball recruiting class should be just fine. It will be interesting to see where Kanon Catchings ends up now that his recruitment is open again. He will be a big get for whoever is fortunate enough to land his commitment.
