The Los Angeles Rams entered Super Bowl 56 Sunday as the favorites against the Cincinnati Bengals. When it was all over, Cooper Kupp both had the Vince Lombardi and Super Bowl MVP trophies to kiss. What a way to end the 2021 NFL season for someone who used to be a big underdog.

According to Stats By STATS, Kupp has just become the second player over the past three decades to win a Super Bowl MVP despite not playing in an FBS school and not getting drafted in the first round. Perhaps even more astonishing is that the first player in that span to accomplish that feat also played with the Rams. You might have heard of him: Kurt Warner.

Number of #SuperBowl MVPs who (a) didn't play at an FBS school and (b) weren't drafted in the 1st round, last 30 years:

@RamsNFL: 2 (Kurt Warner, Cooper Kupp)
All other teams: 0

To say that Cooper Kupp had an incredible 2021 season would be an understatement. Kupp, who played college football at Eastern Washington University, finished as the leader in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches. His play was certainly elevated by the arrival of quarterback Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles, but that's not to say that Kupp wouldn't have been nearly as great if he played alongside a different QB. He was simply on a level of his own in 2021, and the Rams hope that he will be able to keep it going in 2022 when they look to defend their crown.
