After five years, wide receiver Tavon Austin’s time with the Los Angeles Rams is finally up. NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo reports that the Rams intend to trade or release Austin before the start of the league year on March 14. Although, the Rams are already on the hook for $5 million of the $8 million he’s due this year.

Austin was the Rams’ first-round pick (eighth overall) in the 2013 draft. He came into the league with a lot of promise and was billed as a big-time playmaker, not only as a receiver but also as a runner and a returner.

However, he was never really able to live up to that potential. His best year was in 2015, when he had 907 total yards from scrimmage and nine touchdowns (five receiving, four rushing). That breakout season earned him a six-year, $56 million deal, but he did not come close to justifying that lofty contract.

Austin was hardly a factor in first-year head coach Sean McVay’s system, which transformed the Rams into the most prolific offense in the league. He set new career-lows with just 13 catches for 47 yards as newcomers Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods, and Cooper Kupp all overtook him in the wide receiver depth chart. Austin was used primarily as a runner as he rushed 59 times for 270 yards.

It’s hard to see any team being interested in trading for Austin on his current deal. But as a free agent, there’s likely to be at least one team willing to take a gamble on him, if not as a receiver, then as a return specialist.
