The New York Rangers have been on fire as of late. In fact, they have played well enough to earn the top spot in ClutchPoints' NHL Power Rankings on Monday. However, Monday night saw a very scary incident take place, and it may leave the Blueshirts without forward Kaapo Kakko for some time.

Kakko engaged with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Erik Johnson along the boards. During their battle, the Rangers forward lost his footing. As he fell, one of his legs bent, causing it to crash into the boards as he fell to the ice. He left the game, and did not return for the rest of the contest, the team announced.

We won't know the exact nature of the injury for a while. The injury was hard to watch, though, and looked rather bad. Kakko not returning to the game also sparks concerns over the severity of the injury.

In any event, this is certainly a turn of events the Rangers don't want. Kakko has gotten off to a slow start this season, scoring just three points through 20 games. However, he is a former second-overall pick from the 2019 NHL Draft. And the Finnish forward entered the league with a ton of potential behind him.

Kakko started slow in the NHL, but New York certainly had to have hope for a breakout season following last year's performance. The 22-year-old enjoyed a career season offensively, scoring 18 goals and 40 points through a full 82 games.

New York and their fans are concerned for the health of their young forward after such a scary incident, and that's understandable. Hopefully, the injury isn't as bad as it looked, and he can make a full return to the ice sooner rather than later.
