The New York Rangers needed some heroes to force a Game 7 against the Carolina Hurricanes, and they got them on Saturday night in a 5-2 victory at Madison Square Garden. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin was one of those heroes, racking up 37 saves while also making history by handing out a pair of assists to help bolster the offense.

Shesterkin assisted on Mika Zibanejad's power-play goal in the first period, and then he added his second tally on Filip Chytil's goal in the second that gave the Rangers a 4-1 lead. The goalie took care of the rest in net by saving 37 of 39 shots to move to 6-1 at MSG in the playoffs. He has a .949 save percentage and 2.04 goals-against average at home this postseason.

After his sterling performance, Shesterkin remained humble about his surprise contributions on offense, per ESPN's Greg Wyshynski:

“Honestly, I think it was mostly the guys who did all the work,” Shesterkin said. “I just left them the puck, and they delivered.”

Shesterkin's two assists marked the first time in nearly 20 years a Rangers goalie (the legendary Mike Richter was the last) pulled off that feat in any regular-season or playoff game. He also became just the fifth goalie in NHL history to record two assists in a postseason game.

Now, New York faces a Game 7 on the road. Shesterkin has not yet won at Carolina in this series, so it's going to be a tough challenge. The winner of this series will have the honor of playing the two-time defending champion Tampa Bay Lightning in the Eastern Conference Finals.
