Toronto Raptors head coach Nick Nurse says point guard Fred VanVleet could be out “a little while” with his hamstring injury.

VanVleet is also dealing with a jammed finger:

The Raptors are 24-12 on the season. They are in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

In 22 games this season, Fred VanVleet is averaging 18.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 7.0 assists. He’s shooting 39.4 percent from the field, 37.2 percent from beyond the arc and 84.7 percent from the free-throw line.

VanVleet projects to be one of the NBA’s most coveted unrestricted free agents during the 2020 offseason. The Raptors will be careful with him moving forward since it’s a long regular season.

Now 25, VanVleet re-signed with the Raptors in 2018 on a two-year, $18 million deal. Toronto signed Kyle Lowry to a one-year, $31 million extension before the season started. Some, though, believe Toronto will make VanVleet the primary guard soon since Lowry is getting older.

VanVleet went undrafted out of Wichita State in 2016. He’s an NBA champion and one of the most underrated players in the NBA today.

Along with VanVleet, the Raptors are still without small forward Pascal Siakam, who was playing like an All-Star for Toronto before getting hurt. Siakam was putting up 25.1 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 45.7 percent from the field and 39.2 percent from beyond the arc in 27 games. The Raptors star is out with a groin ailment.
